Novelista y cuentista estadounidense. Debe su fama al cuento "La lotería (1948), un relato espeluznante que provocó escándalo cuando fue publicado por primera vez, y a La casa encantada (1959; película, 1963, 1999). Estas obras y sus otras cinco novelas, entre las que figura Siempre hemos vivido en el castillo (1962), confirmaron a la autora como una maestra del horror gótico y el suspenso psicológico.
